For consumers, product and service review sites can be a wonderful thing, allowing them to get a firsthand glimpse of what they’ll receive before they do business with a new company. Unfortunately, not every vendor is playing fair, and there are all kinds of businesses seeking to undercut one another by writing false, negative reviews about one another.

What Are They Saying About You?

If you’ve never taken the time to look through a few industry review sites, go to Google now and see if you can find some that would pertain to you. Then, enter your company’s name in the search box and see what comes up. Hopefully, there won’t be anything negative for you to find. If there is, though, don’t panic. Just make a point of noting what’s in the review, when it came in, and where (as best you can tell) it came from.

Next, determine whether the information on the review site is accurate or not. If it isn’t, you can probably have it removed simply by writing to the webmaster and disputing whatever is being claimed. Whether it’s from a mistaken customer or a malicious competitor, most bad reviews won’t stand up to a firm challenge from a business owner or manager. If the information is legitimate, try to quickly and publicly see if you can resolve the dispute directly with the affected customer. Ideally, you wouldn’t want to have a problem with your products or customer service in the first place; if you do, however, the next best thing is to show the whole world that you’re willing to do what it takes to make the situation right.

Regardless of whether poor information being posted about you on these sites is legitimate or not, it’s important that you fight them and do the best you can for your business – and that starts with paying attention to what’s being posted in the first place. It might not seem like a big deal to have one bad review here and there, but keep in mind that many of these sites are indexed frequently by the major search engines, meaning that it doesn’t take long for one piece of bad information to show up on Google, Yahoo, and Bing.
